Blocked Drains Northmead

Northmead sits on the leafy northern edge of Parramatta, named for the "north meadow" of the old Government House estate. Established post-war brick and fibro homes fill the hilly blocks, and since around 2006 a strong wave of townhouses and apartments has lifted the unit share well past where it used to sit.

The older post-war stock is where most of our calls originate. Roots from established trees and the bushland edging parts of the suburb push into ageing drain lines, a leading cause of repeat blockages here.

Cracked clay pipework compounds it. Post-war homes were laid with clay drainage that lets in roots and silt once the joints start to give, and that's often the real reason a "cleared" drain blocks again within months.

Windsor Road and Briens Road are the suburb's main arteries, and the newer townhouse and apartment stock has clustered closest to Windsor Road specifically.

The demographic mix here leans toward established families, a lot of them in homes that have been in the one household for decades. That matters underground, because the original post-war drainage in those properties has often never been touched, right up until it fails.

The apartment growth since 2006 tells a different story. Modern PVC pipework in that newer stock sidesteps most of the root trouble, but the extra roof and hardstand area adds real load to the same stormwater network the older houses rely on.

The terrain adds a third factor. This suburb's gullies run down toward two creek systems, and a heavy Sydney downpour can overload stormwater drains fast, especially where a hilly block funnels runoff to one low corner of the yard.

A CCTV drain inspection narrows it down fast, and blocked drain repair handles most of what it finds, with blocked stormwater picking up the rest once the weather turns.
